What Is Risk Assessment?
A risk assessment is a structured process used to identify what could go wrong at your workplace, evaluate the likelihood and severity of harm, and determine the controls needed to keep people, assets, and operations safe. It provides a clear, evidence-based understanding of the risks present in your workplace and the measures required to manage them effectively. It looks ahead at your potential areas of weakness and seeks to help you eliminate or mitigate risk of failure, and harm to people, products and premises.
Done well, risk assessment becomes more than a compliance exercise—it becomes a practical tool for informed decision-making, operational efficiency, and organisational resilience.
Why Complete Risk Assessments?
Completing risk assessments is a legal requirement, but the benefits extend far beyond compliance.
Effective risk assessments help organisations to:- Protect people, reputation, and business continuity
- Reduce incidents, claims, and operational disruption
- Improve workforce confidence and engagement
- Support safe, efficient, and consistent working practices
- Provide clear evidence of due diligence to regulators, insurers, and stakeholders
When risk assessments are robust, up-to-date, and embedded into everyday operations, they become a foundation for safer performance and stronger governance.
Linking Risk Assessment With Wider Risk Strategy
Risk assessments are most powerful when they are integrated into your broader organisational strategy. We help you connect frontline risk controls with board-level governance, enabling:
- Clear visibility of operational risks at executive level
- Alignment between safety performance and business objectives
- Stronger assurance for trustees, boards, and regulators
- Better prioritisation of resources and investment
- A proactive, data-driven approach to risk management
By linking risk assessment outcomes with your wider risk, safety, and governance frameworks, we support a culture where safety is not just compliant—but strategic, value-adding, and commercially intelligent.
Independent evaluation of safety &
wellbeing KPIs, culture metrics, and governance effectiveness. Our Board Safety Performance Reviews provide independent, evidence-based evaluation of how effectively safety and wellbeing are being led, measured, and governed across your organisation. We assess key performance indicators (KPIs) using leading and lagging indicators, cultural metrics, and governance structures to determine whether your board’s safety and risk vision is being translated into meaningful outcomes. This includes reviewing strategic alignment between business priorities, leadership behaviours, reporting frameworks, and assurance mechanisms — ensuring that safety is not only monitored, but actively driven.
By combining data analysis with behavioural insight, we highlight strengths, gaps, and opportunities for improvement. Our reviews offer boards a clear line of sight from policy to practice, enabling confident oversight and informed decision-making. Whether you’re seeking assurance, benchmarking progress, or preparing for regulatory scrutiny, this service helps you demonstrate that safety and wellbeing are integral to your organisation’s performance, culture, and long- term value.
High-level guidance on UK and
international safety law, tailored to board responsibilities and the industry sectorDevelopment and review of health and safety Risk Registers and corporate Risk Registers that include safety and environmental risks. Our Legal and Regulatory Advisory service provides high-level, board-focused guidance on UK and international health and safety law, tailored to your industry and governance responsibilities.
We help senior leaders understand their legal duties, anticipate regulatory developments, and embed compliance into strategic decision-making. This includes the development and review of health and safety compliance risk registers, ensuring that legal obligations are clearly mapped, monitored, and aligned with your organisation’s risk appetite.
We also support the integration of safety and environmental risks into broader corporate Risk Registers, enabling a joined-up view of operational, reputational, and ESG exposures. Whether you’re navigating complex legislation, preparing for regulatory or industry standard scrutiny, or seeking assurance that your governance structures are fit for purpose, our advisory service ensures your board is informed, accountable, and equipped to lead with confidence. It’s about turning legal complexity into strategic clarity and compliance into cultural credibility.
Insightful audits that go beyond compliance — helping you understand, improve, and assure your safety performance.
We offer a range of health and safety audit solutions tailored to your organisation’s needs, maturity, and strategic goals. Each of these approaches are also modified for your industry sector and cross link (where relevant) to other regulatory drivers in your industry, eg CQC, Ofsted, SALSA, DVSA.
Many organisations confuse an audit with an inspection. Note that an audit reviews your management systems whereas an inspection simply checks the workplace standards. An audit will consider both as inspections offer insights as to whether your management systems are working in practice. An audit therefore takes longer and requires more planning.
Whether you are looking for a light touch audit to gain a general insight about your risk and safety management system, or a deep dive, with over 38 years of experience we are well positioned to support you in developing an audit process that meets your needs.
A Collaborative Approach to Health & Safety Auditing That Reflects Your Reality
We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all audits. Every organisation has its own structure, culture, and strategic priorities, so we begin by listening. Through a collaborative discovery process, we work with you to understand your objectives, risk profile, and the outcomes you need and want from the audit. Together, we design an audit format that suits your organisation — from the level of detail and scope, to how findings are presented and communicated.
Whether you need board-level assurance, reassurance on compliance, operational insight, or cultural diagnostics, our tailored approach ensures the audit delivers value, clarity, and relevance. It’s your audit, shaped to reflect your world. Below are some examples of some of the audit types we routinely deliver.
Our Health and Safety Audits
Initial Gap Analysis
This type of analysis provides you with a high-level review to identify strengths, weaknesses, and priority areas for improvement across your safety systems and culture. It measures whether you are currently meeting basic legal requirements and where the gaps may be (as well as their potential significance). It is a useful starting point when assessing your risk and compliance status.
Management System Audit
Our management system audits provide a structured evaluation against recognised standards such as ISO 45001 or HSG 65, assessing how well your safety management system is designed, implemented, and maintained.
Whether you already have systems developed to these standards, are considering them, or simply want to have an independent view of where your organisation’s systems and culture is set, a safety management system audit will provide what you need. We say this because we tailor the format and content to suit your objectives and ensure the outputs exceeds your expectations.
Compliance & Risk Audit
A deep-dive audit examining the extent to which your policies, procedures, and practices meet legal requirements, HSE guidance, and other relevant standards — and whether they’re being applied in reality.
Each audit provides clear, actionable insights to support board assurance, continuous improvement, and strategic alignment between safety, risk, and performance.
Audit Findings Driving Strategic Decisions on Safety & Risk
Regardless of the audit format that you choose, our recommendations are categorised based on a RAG (Red–Amber–Green) rating system to help prioritise action and support effective governance. This approach provides clarity on the level of risk, urgency, and potential impact of each finding. The rating can be integrated with all management systems including those from the International Standards Organisation (ISO) systems.
- Red indicates a high-risk issue or a specific breach of minimum legal requirements that requires immediate attention.
- Amber highlights medium-risk issues, such as non-compliance with HSE guidance or other relevant standards, which may not be legally non-compliant but still pose operational or reputational risk.
- Green reflects low-risk observations or opportunities for further improvement that support continuous development and cultural maturity.
Training & Board Briefings
Providing training with consistent messaging from Board to front line workers.
We have significant experience and practice in developing and designing training content that starts with Board level attendees, and which then feeds through the management lines to front level staff. The same trainer usually delivers them all, modifying content to suit the audience whilst ensuring consistency in messaging and priorities set from the senior teams.
This approach achieves a high level of impact and success, and integrates well with your wider communication tactics.
Director / Board Briefings
We tailor the content so it relates to your organisation, your own challenges and helps you to focus on assurance requirements using real-life scenarios, legal insight from a Registered Expert Witness and your own data. Sessions can be from one hour briefings to a whole day.

We write case studies based around your industry to provide thought-provoking and pragmatic learning via problem solving. Duration of courses can typically be from half day to 4 days.
